Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah!
I would like to introduce myself, the owner of Heather's Hijabs. I am an American who converted to Islam at Eid al-Fitr 2003. About a month and a half later, I started wearing hijab full-time. I am working my way through graduate school in International Studies, and live in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Heather's Hijabs was born from my frustration with online hijab resources available to American Muslims. As an American woman with typical straight and slippery hair, I had a lot of trouble learning how to keep my scarves from sliding on my head and keeping wisps of hair from slipping out. My international Muslim friends recommended different types of underscarves, but all of my friends had brought their hijabs from their home countries or had family send new items overseas to them occasionally. They could not tell me where I could find what I needed. From our small town, the closest clothing store for Muslim women was hours distant. Trying to shop online was difficult because I wasn't sure exactly what I needed, and when I did find what I wanted online, ordering those items often required paying high overseas shipping costs.
My first visit to Indonesia, early in 2004, was like walking into a treasure house. Everywhere I went, I found dozens of scarves and underscarves available for sale. I thought that perhaps I could help other American Muslims find what they need by bringing back and offering for sale a variety of these items. In particular, I focused on several styles of underscarves unlike those I have found available in America. From this Indonesian visit, Heather's Hijabs was able to become a reality.
